There’s been a recent rise in gacha games, with Genshin Impact dominating for a while now. A new contender has arrived called Wuthering Waves. Both games share a DNA, but beneath the surface they’re very different.
So which one should you go for? Here’s a breakdown of the two games:
Lighthearted Adventure Vs Post Apocalyptic World
Taking place in Teyvat, a world rich in cultures and lore, Genshin Impact follows the quest of a carefree traveler looking for a lost sibling. Genshin has a lot to explore, an amazing story, and a lot of characters to meet.

Wuthering Waves, a post-apocalyptic tale, puts you in the middle of crumbling megacities and overgrown landscapes. The narrative is darker, focused on rebuilding civilization and figuring out what happened.

Genshin Vs Wuthering : COMBAT!
Strategic Elemental Combos
- You play Genshin Impact with four characters at once and switch between them on the fly triggering powerful elemental effects.
- The Combat revolves around elemental reactions.
- Exploration focuses on gliding and climbing, similar to Zelda.
Fluid Movement with Parry
- There’s more action in Wuthering. With features like wall-running and a retractable grappling hook, players have more freedom to move.
- Quick-time events are often woven into cutscenes during battles.
- Launching yourself up into the air and grappling on surfaces makes exploration more dynamic.
The Mobile Gameplay for Genshin Vs Wuthering
- One big problem is that combat is very hard for Wuthering if you are playing on the mobile phone. For example, parrying is very tough to do on mobile. Unless you are using a controller, it would be better not attempt the harder content on mobile.
- Genshin does this a lot better, the combat is a lot easier and relies on switching the characters in play more than dodging and parrying. This makes it a lot easier to do combos on the mobile phone.
The Gacha System of Genshin and WuWa
- In both games, you can get new characters and weapons by spending in-game currency or premium currency and Genshin has a “pity system” that guarantees a high-rarity character after a certain number of pulls.
- As well as introducing a separate currency for weapons, Wuthering also offers a guaranteed high-rarity character within a specific pool after 80 pulls.
Monetization & Content Updates:
- Genshin is a free-to-play game that focuses on long-term engagement. Players come back for new regions, characters, and story updates. The gacha system might be a bit stingy and some players might have to grind a lot for resources to move forward.
- WW is also free-to-play, but it’s still early on. The initial content seems substantial but it’s unclear how the developers will handle future updates.
Since ‘WuWa’ had a rocky start, it gave more compensation for optimization problems. (See the announcement here)
Is Wuthering Waves DEAD?
Recently some very big content creators popularized phrases like “Is Genshin dead?”
So, is this THE REAL GENSHIN KILLER?
Wuthering Waves vs Genshin Impact: END THE FIGHTING!
You’ll have to decide for yourself between the two games, which one is for you. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you decide:
- Genshin Impact is a good choice if you like a lighthearted story. Do you prefer element-based combat? Are you fine with a long-term commitment and potential gacha frustrations?
- It’s worth picking Wuthering Waves if you’re looking for a darker narrative and a post-apocalyptic setting. Do you like fast-paced, action-oriented combat?
